Tiantian School of Qigong Directory of Certified Teachers

Why is certification important?
Students often ask whether they can teach (or their teacher hears through the grapevine that they have taught) others the qigong methods they have learned. It is very important that a student who has not been trained as a teacher not teach others. Receiving training in how to practice a form is much different than the training provided to an experienced student in how to safely and effectively teach the form to others. For this reason, it should be noted that to teach any of the powerful medical qigong systems or forms within Prof. Chen Huixian's lineage, one must not only receive training in the form but also successfully complete teacher training and certification with a teacher authorized to provide this service. It is also for this reason that those who have not studied with a certified teacher are not permitted access to study materials, as self-teaching is also an unsafe option. Our teachers in China are always dismayed to hear of the popularity of qigong DVDs and books in the West, shaking their heads to think anyone would attempt to study or practice qigong on their own with a video or book, without the guidance of an experienced teacher. To ensure you have a safe and positive experience with qigong, please always find a certified instructor with whom to study.

How to approach certification for the form you are practicing

In addition to sufficient personal practice time invested throughout your training, and a commitment to a daily personal practice, the following is required:

Soaring Crane Qigong: there are three levels of study that preceed teacher training and certification to teach the first level's methods. Once a certified teacher has sufficient experience teaching the Level I methods, the teacher may be invited to participate in a Level II teacher training. A Level II teacher who has taught the Level I and II methods effectively and consistently over time may be invited to be trained as a Level III teacher. The Chinese have a saying: there are many hairs on a water buffalo, but only two horns. This is a good analogy for the attrition rate of Soaring Crane Qigong teachers. For example, Prof. Chen trained and certified hundreds of Level I teachers. There are fewer than 50 Level II teachers, and fewer than 20 Level III teachers. Only one, Teri Applegate, is authorized by the Soaring Crane Qigong masters in China to train and certify Level I, II and III teachers of the system. Following our analogy, Teri is a "horn." The Soaring Crane Qigong Level I teachers listed below (with the exception of Kris Caldwell) received their teacher training and certification from Teri Applegate through her Seattle-based program.

Turtle Longevity Qigong and Essence Qigong: There are two levels of study required prior to applying for teacher training and certification of the Level I and II methods of either of these forms.

Awakening Light Gong and Super Energy Method: There is one level of study required prior to applying for teacher training and certification of either of these forms.

Wendi Crandall-Amidon (Oahu), Soaring Crane Qigong Level I
Wendi Crandall-AmidonAs a former school teacher, lifeguard and swim instructor, Wendi has a natural talent for--and a great deal of experience in--imparting information and guiding students in coordinating mind and body. She began teaching swimming lessons when she was only eight years old. Thanks to her mom and sister, Wendi has continued to help teach swimming lessons every summer at her family's swimming school in New York. Her early experience as a teacher was a major catalyst into her education career. Wendi has taught elementary education through environmental schools, parent co-op schools, and public schools in Maine, New York, Virginia, Guam and Hawai'i. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Special Education. An avid surfer, she currently lives on Oahu.

Wendi began her study of Soaring Crane Qigong with Teri Applegate in Hawai'i in 2003. Wendi traveled to Seattle to continue training with Teri in Soaring Crane Qigong through Tiantian School of Qigong, participating in Soaring Crane Qigong Level II in 2004 and going on to complete Level III training in 2006. Wendi was certified to teach the Level I methods by Teri Applegate through Tiantian School of Qigong in 2006. Learning and practicing Soaring Crane Qigong has been such a loving and healing experience for Wendi that she looks forward to giving back to her community and spreading the aloha of this remarkable qigong form. In addition to benefiting profoundly from her qigong practice in her journey through breast cancer, Soaring Crane has also helped Wendi begin to explore her true passion: working with and learning from animals. Having also completed specialized training in energy work as it is applied to healing animals in 2005, Wendi founded Nalo's Healing Arts for Animals, which offers hydrotherapy, Reiki, Healing Touch and massage.

Jill Bullitt (Raleigh), Soaring Crane Qigong Level I
Jill Bullitt"When people say they're looking for the meaning of life, what they're
really looking for is a deep experience of it." (- Joseph Campbell) Although
Jill turned to Soaring Crane Qigong as a healing discipline, as those
concerns receded she was delighted to discover how it offers her a deeper
sense of engagement with life as she lives it day-to-day.

Jill began her study of Soaring Crane at Cancer Lifeline in Seattle in
2005 with Kris Caldwell and continued her with Teri Applegate, who certified
her to teach the Level I methods in June 2007. Jill is a Seattle native, and
has been a practicing artist for many years. Jill is also an Iyengar Yoga
enthusiast, and her teaching is informed by this background in energetic
movement. She discovered her love of teaching about 10 years ago in graduate school, and subsequently became a professor. She now teaches painting and drawing in Seattle and in North Carolina.

In China qigong has been central to the creative process of many of its artists for thousands of years. Because Jill has found that the study of Soaring Crane Qigong has offered her tremendous insights into her own creative work, she hopes to offer to her students similar access to their own creativity through their practice.

Jane Marie Haley (Portland), Soaring Crane Qigong Level I
Jane Marie HaleyJane has been practicing Soaring Crane Qigong since 2002. She initially became interested in qigong for personal health reasons, and gradually the daily practice became a way of life. The health benefits as well as the life changing experiences she has had through qigong motivates her to pursue sharing with others the knowledge of energy healing and personal growth through self-awareness. Toward this goal, Jane traveled to Seattle to continue her Soaring Crane Qigong training with Teri Applegate, first by taking Soaring Crane Qigong Level II in 2004, and then participating in Teri's Level III program through Tiantian School of Qigong. Jane was certified to teach the Level I methods by Teri in 2005.

Jane's continued interest in sharing with others the benefits of energy work also led her to Pranic Healing from the teachings of Grandmaster Choa Koc Sui. In 2005 she received her certification as an Associate Pranic Healer from the Institute of Inner Studies in Manila. She continues her studies in energy work with Master Co and Master Nona from the American Institute of Asian Studies. The main focus of her practice is Pranic Psychotherapy, which includes Pranic treatments related to health issues. Jane serves on the Pranic Healing Board in Portland. Her daily practice of Soaring Crane Qigong continues to enhance Jane's life as well as heighten her intuitive skills in the work she does with her clients. I am honored to be a lineage holder of SCQigong and as a teacher to share it with others.

His qigong practice also extends to the external energy work he does with horses as the owner of Equine Rehab and Therapy. Jeff received his training in Turtle Longevity Qigong from Kris Caldwell through Tiantian School of Qigong, and in 2004 traveled to Hawaii to be trained and certified as a teacher of Turtle Longevity Qigong by Professor Chen Huixian. Rachel N. McGovern (Whidbey Island),
Essence Qigong, Soaring Crane Qigong Level I

Rachel Norton McGovernRachel feels qigong brought her home to her senses and helps her connect to the full spectrum of experience. She began her Soaring Crane Qigong training with Kris Caldwell after receiving a cancer diagnosis. Her discipline from a twenty-year devotion to Zen meditation practice strengthened her commitment to consistent qigong practice. Gradually and gently, this practice has illuminated her life and brought a new appreciation and discernment to her daily living. Teri ApplegateTeri Applegate, M.Ac. OM, L.Ac.
Certified Qigong Instructor,
Soaring Crane Qigong lineage holder,
Turtle Longevity Lineage Holder

A gifted instructor, Teri was Professor Chen Huixian's head teaching assistant at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine for several years before Prof. Chen retired. In 2000 she began teaching Soaring Crane Qigong to graduate students and the general public at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. For five years she taught qigong classes for the chronically and critically ill through Providence Health Systems in their Portland hospitals. Teri has made five trips to China for continuing study with several masters of the forms she teaches (please visit the Our Lineage page for more information on these remarkable teachers). During her trip in 2000, Teri stayed for a month in a rural Chinese hospital to observe qigong Master Zhang Yulei work with mentally ill patients. Following her time with Master Zhang, Teri interned for a month at the Nanjing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the departments of acupuncture and herbal cancer medicines.

Teri holds certifications in multiple qigong systems and forms. Professor Chen's senior student, she is the only non-Chinese lineage holder of Soaring Crane Qigong; one of only five lineage holders of Turtle Longevity Qigong outside the Wang family; and one of few Westerners authorized to train and certify teachers of Essence Qigong. Additionally, in 2006 Teri was one of the first Westerners to be certified by Prof. Chen to teach Awakening Light Gong. The Seattle qigong community is fortunate to have her ongoing guidance and support. Currently Teri is in private practice as a practitioner of Chinese medicine both at her Seattle clinic and at the new Providence Regional Cancer Partnership in Everett. Teri also teaches qigong classes and workshops regularly in Seattle and Everett.

Teri Applegate's arrival in Seattle has contributed significantly to growing the qigong community of Prof. Chen's lineage here. Since her first Soaring Crane Qigong Level II workshop at Tiantian School of Qigong in 2003, the community of people in Seattle practicing Soaring Crane Qigong has grown exponentially. Teri has certified over 30 teachers through her Seattle-based teacher training program through Tiantian School of Qigong since 2004, many of whom are teaching actively. This means there now are many more opportunities for Soaring Crane Qigong training and practice in more locations (especially around the Puget Sound area) than ever before.

Kris CaldwellKris Caldwell
Certified Qigong Instructor,
Turtle Longevity Lineage Holder,
Tiantian School of Qigong Founder & Director

Kris has extensive training in qigong theory and practice and is a certified instructor of multiple qigong systems and forms (see Kris' resume for a complete list of her teaching certifications). She began her study of qigong with Professor Chen Huixian at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine and in 2000 became a graduate of OCOM's Qigong Teacher Training Program. Since 2002 Kris has also had the benefit of an ongoing mentoring relationship with Prof. Chen's senior student, Teri Applegate.

In 2001 Kris founded Tiantian School of Qigong, the Northwest's first school providing training exclusively in medical qigong methods, with a desire to cultivate a vibrant qigong community within Prof. Chen's lineage in the Puget Sound area. She has been rewarded "ten-thousand fold" in her students' dedication to their practice, with many going on to train in the higher levels of their forms with Teri Applegate and/or Prof. Chen Huixian, often becoming certified to teach, facilitated by the workshops with both teachers hosted by Tiantian School of Qigong. The school has also been delighted to receive Dr. Charles Wu twice for workshops (with Charles, we should really call them "playshops") on the Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucianist philosophies.

Several of Kris' students have also traveled to China with Prof. Chen to further cultivate their understanding of qigong, Chinese Medicine, Daoism, and Buddhism. In 2002 Kris made her own first trip to China to study with internationally respected qigong masters and doctors of Chinese Medicine (please visit the Our Lineage page for more information on these remarkable teachers, and the China Travel Journal page to read notes and see photos from Kris' 2002 and 2007 trips). Kris made three more trips to China 2005 - 2007 to participate in an invitational Turtle Longevity Qigong lineage holder training with Master Wang Zhezhong, and is now one of only five lineage holders of this form outside the Wang family.

Kris taught widely around the Northwest for six years (see Kris' resume for a complete teaching history). She was the first qigong instructor for Cancer Lifeline, teaching up to seven classes a week in Soaring Crane Qigong and 1000 Hands Buddha sitting meditation from 2002-2007. Kris was also the first qigong instructor for the YMCA of Greater Seattle, and has taught Turtle Longevity Qigong at several branches. She also provided qigong presentations for the Cancer as a Turning Point Seattle conference in 2004 and 2006. For three years Kris also served as the layout artist for the Wu Dao Jing She International Qigong Society newsletter, and in 2006 edited Prof. Chen's English translation of the Awakening Light Gong textbook.

Kris is indebted to Prof. Chen, Teri, Dr. Wu, and her teachers in China for the generous gift of their wisdom, encouragement, and support in her journey.

Kris is currently on sabbatical in China. (Please note that Tiantian School of Qigong -sponsored activities are suspended while Kris is on sabbatical.)
